Increase in juvenile rape convicts due to easy access to porn, says child psychiatrist

When a police team reached Bhagwan Singh’s (name changed) house in Etmadpur area of Agra to search for his 14-year-old son, he could not understand what his son could have done for the cops to come looking for him. However, when the sub-inspector told Singh that his son had raped a girl, he could not believe his ears. Singh’s son is now being held at the juvenile correction facility in Agra.

In another case, Kasganj resident Ram Pratap Singh’s (name changed) 14-year-old son has also been sent to a juvenile home for allegedly raping a minor girl in Agra. Ram Pratap’s son had allegedly kidnapped the minor girl with some of his friends and raped her.

The sons of Bhagwan Singh and Ram Pratap are among the 50 teenage boys currently held at the juvenile correction facility in Agra for heinous crimes, including rape and murder.

Of them, 15 have been detained under the POCSO Act, while several others have been kept at the facility for theft, robbery and murder. A total of 17 juveniles have spent over a year at the Agra facility, while 13 have spent two years. While 17 juveniles hail from Firozabad, 28 are from Etah, 15 from Kasganj and 42 from Aligarh.

The superintendent of the facility Ravi Khan told IndiaToday.in that some of these juveniles are of “calm nature while some are very violent”.

“Such violent juveniles are kept under special watch. They are given counseling from time to time in order to reform them. Some have even realised their mistake and are repenting now,” Khan said.

Speaking about the rise of juvenile crime cases, SSP Agra Bablu Kumar stressed the need of paying special attention to children, especially when they are teenagers.

“It is necessary to pay special attention to the children during their teen years, since they undergo a lot of transformations, both mentally and physically. The fact that a lot of these kids are being held for a crime like rape indicates that the parents need to pay better attention to their kids and keep assessing their mindset by talking to them,” SSP Agra said.

Meanwhile, Agra-based child psychiatrist Dr Divik Seth said the increase in juvenile rape convicts was primarily due to the accessibility of “pornographic content” on their smartphones.

“Smartphones have opened an entirely new and unfamiliar world for teenagers, which rewires their brains with negativity if proper care is not taken by the parents. The easy availability of pornographic and titillating material on the internet has become very dangerous. This have very bad influence on their growing brains. The increase in teenage rape convicts is largely attributable to the availability of porn on the smartphone,” he said.
