Former India wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta has said that a healthy competition between Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer will elevate their games to a whole different level.
Deep Dasgupta’s comment has come just before the start of the 3-match ODI series between India and England. The cricketer-turned-commentator reckoned that Shreyas Iyer will bat at number 4 for India in Tuesday’s match in Pune.
Notably, Suryakumar Yadav starred at the number 3 position in the last 2 T20Is against England as Shreyas Iyer also impressed while batting low down the order. Shreyas, who usually bats in the top four, batted at the fifth and sixth position in the T20Is. Rishabh Pant played ahead of the Mumbai batsman.
Deep Dasgupta has noted that Shreyas Iyer’s T20I batting has changed ever since the arrival of Suryakumar Yadav in the team.
“Shreyas, for me, starts at No. 4. HIs ODI numbers at No. 4 are quite impressive. Yes, Surya is there. That’s a very healthy competition. And if you look at it, after Surya has come in, Shreyas’s batting in T20I has changed. If you look at his strike rate and numbers, he is looking like a different batsman. I think that competition is going to push both the players to kind of start elevating their game and the bar that they set for each other,” Deep Dasgupta said on Sports Today.
On the eve of the series opener, Virat Kohli confirmed India’s opening pair going into the match. He said that experienced Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan will continue to open for India in the 50-over format.
“Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma will definitely open. When it comes to ODI, there are no doubts about that. They’ve been amazing over the past few years,” Kohli said in his pre-match virtual conference.
Virat Kohli is expected to come at the usual number 3 position and it will be interesting to see the batting order of the rest of the selected players in the eleven.
